Tesla Motors is a young company which launched in 2003 with the goal of “making electric cars awesome.” The release of the sporty Tesla Roadster in 2008 did just that. This fantastic little coupe can drive for 250 miles on a single charge. The best part of this whole deal is that a full charge will cost less than half the price of a gallon of gas. And that is where this startup company has been facing trouble.
Existing motor vehicle manufacturers are not even noticing an impact on their sales yet, but they are still actively moving to prevent the sales of Tesla Motor’s cars. They’ve managed to get direct sales entirely blocked in the state of New Jersey and are trying to get similar legislation passed in Missouri. They are calling Tesla’s direct to customer sales an unfair advantage, since most manufacturers sell their vehicles through enormous franchises and dealerships.
In response to this, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has made an unprecedented move. He’s released all of the patents related to the creation of his electric cars to the public. When asked about this unparalleled move, Musk had this to say.
