Press release - New York, NY, USA - April 8, 2015
LOCATION: The Varick Room, 54 Varick Street, New York City
Saturday April 11th – 7pm
Conception have been globe trotting for the last 4 years in search of the best in emerging art, with features during Art Basel Miami and exhibits throughout the continental US and Europe. The group is now taking up residency in Tribeca for their upcoming roster of New York City art events.
Wednesday, April 9th, 9am: The Wall Street Journal, Paper Magazine and leading global art publications had a lot to say about Conception Art Events last year, and it comes as no surprise. The group, founded in Tribeca in 2011, by two New York City based artists, has been growing at a fast pace. Their unique approach to bringing fine art direct to collectors without the involvement of expensive gallery commissions has been catching on around the US. It is Tribeca however, that they have decided upon to take up a more permanent residence for their upcoming roster of emerging artist’s events.
This coming Saturday, April 11th Conception Art Show will bring over 35 local and international artists to the Varick Room at Tribeca Cinemas.
In a unique and multi media setting the group take pride in bringing art to the public in an unconventional manner. Steering away from the white-wall clinical gallery setting in favor of a more interactive and engaging environment, Conception’s founder Rachel Wilkins explains:
“We wanted to create a less intimidating environment to present the work of these emerging artists while at the same time giving guests the opportunity to actually meet the artist and ask questions about the work”
“By eliminating the commissions placed upon works by gallery’s, we are able to offer collectors the chance to buy work direct from the artist, saving a substantial cost” explained Co-founder Mike Wolf.
Conception also take an unconventional approach to ‘scouting’ their artists, in addition to working with local New York City artists, expect to meet some out of town creators too, artists flying in from the Midwest, Florida and even the West Coast to present their work.
Artist and Photographer Denise Richardson is making the trip from rural Terre Haute in Indiana. The mother of two teenagers explains: “Though working in the arts has always been a dream of mine, it has always felt like it wasn’t the right time or that it wasn’t on the cards for me. I found the submission for Conception NYC online and took a chance. Going to New york to show my work seems very surreal right now, almost as if I just stepped out of one of my own works.”
Exhibitor, Ariel Shallit, a New York based artist, born and raised in Queens, creates portraits of figures from politics and popular culture. Capturing the inner emotional life of famous faces that often seem inscrutable when photographed in advertising or by the paparazzi. Ariel has an upcoming solo exhibit in Berlin and is in the process of building this current series to a collection of 400.
During the exhibit, guests will be be entertained by a talent packed lineup of musicians including, Trombonist/vocalist Natalie Cressman’s strikingly original voice melds the sophistication of modern jazz with captivating storytelling. Natalie has spent the last four years touring with Phish’s Trey Anastasio. Guitarist Mike Bono, a presidential Scholarship grad of Berklee College of Music, joins Natalie for this much anticipated performance.
