Press release - Los Angeles, CA, USA - March 16, 2015
The site and platform was founded in 2008 by Danae Ringelmann, Slava Rubin and Eric Schell and it runs on the money of the people who have donated to it. When people donate money to Indiegogo they receive some totem of appreciation instead of a share in the company. However being able to give out shares in the company to financial helpers is a goal for the future for the team. The three founders work together on a global scale however their headquarters is in San Fransisco. There are nine million visitors worldwide on the platform every month.
If you wish to start a campaign you need to do things in the right way and order. First you need to decide what the goal of the campaign is, what kind of campaign it should be and how you can advertise it so that it’ll bring in as much money and interest as possible. Indiegogo will be ready to help you every step of the way. After you have decided on the details surrounding your campaign you will go to the platform to start it. It then falls on you to spread the word and to raise awareness. Perhaps a Facebook page or group or even a website would be a good idea to gain a lot of interest in your campaign.
There are no fees, obligations or commitments when you create a campaign. The fees arrive at the end of the campaign, when it is complete. If your campaign is a non-profit one there will be a 25% discount on the platform fees. This means that if you are running a campaign for profit then you will pay a 4% fee to Indiegogo but if it is non-profit one you’ll only pay 3%. If your campaign did not raise as much money as you predicted there will be a fee as well.
In 2014 Indiegogo expanded and launched a new service called Indiegogo Life. With this new service people can raise money for medical emergencies, medical expenses, birthdays, weddings and other life events without a platform fee. In other words the fundraisers get to keep more of the money they raise, making the fundraising more profitable.
What we’ve learned here is that whether you are an artist looking to set up a gallery, a cancer patient in need of surgery or even a single parent hoping to throw your five year old a nice birthday party, Indiegogo will help you well on your way to make that dream reality.
